    Focus group interviews are called upon in a lot of qualitative studies in which the interviewer listens to a group of individuals who belong to the appropriate target market, talk about an important marketing issue. Focus group interviews are used a lot in the entertainment industry as well. Have a list of questions prepared to ask them as a group so that way they play off of one another and they are able to stimulate each other's thoughts and ideas about how you can improve your health club services and marketing efforts. Focus groups give you a complete different dynamic than individual interviews. When you are dealing with focus groups you are dealing with multiple personalities at one time so you are going to get away from the knee-jerk responses because a lot of the answers to your questions will then be brought up for discussion and debated. Your goal is to get several different points of view so you know whether or not this is just a knee-jerk reaction or if this is a legitimate area in need of focus. It never hurts to try anything, so try to put together your own little focus group for your health club. Randomly pick members and do not just select your friends, because we like people who are like us and we don't want to get the same types of people with the same personalities in the focus group. But that was health club marketing from decades ago; they are still living in the past. Now prospective members are training well into their 80’s and have been very active most of their lives and plan to continue being active because we, as a nation, are far better educated in the benefits of health and fitness throughout their entire lives. I understand that a lot of health clubs don't like to target the grey market because they are afraid they will be in the health club training every day and beating the system. But “most” of the baby boomer (not the few hundred that are core golfers) market are still very active with their business, investments, charities and different social activities that they are not going to commit to training 3-5 times a week. No matter what that 11% is, it is still 11% of the population that is the health and fitness conscientious. You don't have to be concerned about that, or build your business model around the fear that, a lot of these baby boomers are going to be training 3-5 times a week for the rest of their life. Just like anything else in life, everyone is enthusiastic in the beginning; so they might train a lot in the first three months but after three months, they will cool down and they will get back into the rhythm of their normal lives. They will go back to training again once or twice a week because the newness will wear off.     Member-get-a-member promotions have been around forever. Most health club marketers know them as “buddy referral promotions” where health clubs recruit members and prospective members and offer them an incentive for referring new members. I personally love buddy referral promotions because birds of a feather flock together, people within the same income bracket hangout together, people like people who are like them, and people who train socialize with people who train as well. When you have buddies as potential members for your health club, you increase your closing percentage or percentage of being able to lock up the relationship by at least 50%. Almost all of the work has been done for you. You already know they fit the same (or at least close to the same) demographic profile as the member they are being referred by. You know they have an interest in health and fitness because their buddies train. You know they have (or most likely have) the financial resources to pay for the health club membership because their buddy is a member of your health club, etc. Ninety per cent (90%) of the work is done already before the prospective member even called or came in the health club. You just have to make sure you don't do something, or say something wrong that will turn him/her off. The idea is to give enough of an incentive to your existing members to get them to bring in their buddies but yet not give them so much you take away from the income they are already providing the health club. The conditions listed below put you and your baby at a higher risk for problems, such as slowed growth for the baby, preterm labor, preeclampsia, and problems with the placenta. But it’s important to remember that being at high risk doesn’t mean that you or your baby will have problems. As many as 10 percent of pregnancies are considered high risk, but with expert care, 95 percent of these special cases result in the birth of healthy babies. Specific factors that might contribute to a high-risk pregnancy include: 1) Advanced maternal age. Pregnancy risks are higher for mothers age 35 and older and younger than 17. 2) Lifestyle choices. Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and using illegal drugs can put a pregnancy at risk. 3) Medical history. A prior C-section, low birth weight baby or preterm birth — birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy — might increase the risks for subsequent pregnancies. Other risk factors include a fetal genetic condition, a family history of genetic conditions, a history of pregnancy loss or the death of a baby shortly after birth. 4) Underlying conditions. Chronic conditions — such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, Kidney disease and epilepsy — increase pregnancy risks. A blood condition, such as anemia, an infection or an underlying mental health condition also can increase pregnancy risks. 5) Pregnancy complications. Various complications that develop during pregnancy pose risks, such as problems with the uterus, cervix or placenta, or severe morning sickness that continues past the first trimester.
