6th Generation - Playstation2

Sony promised their fans they would make a console better than Sega's Dreamcast. Sega were doing great, then in 2000 Sony released the playstation 2. The playstation 2 had better graphics than the playstation 1 and the Dreamcast. Sega had lost out in Japan because Sony's new console offered the chance to play dvds on your console and the Japanese were amazed by this. So there was no way the Dreamcast could compete with Sony in Japan.

Sega tried hard to win over America and Europe, but the PS2 was dominant and is a great console. I have a PS2 and i love it. I don't need a PS3, i prefer my Dreamcast and PS2. The Dreamcast and the PS2 had some great games, and of course the PS2 is still having games made for it, but will soon fade away. Both systems had amazing graphics and both consoles are great fun to play on. My favourite generation is the sixth generation, but i don't own a 7th gen console. I have played on a PS3 though, it was good, but i don't need one. If i were to buy a 7th gen console it'd be the Wii then the Xbox 360, then the PS3. What i really want is a new Sega console. I think in a couple of years Sega will release a new console and it will be very good.

I'm hoping anyway. I will do about the Xbox and the Gamecube shortly, I don't have great knowledge on those two though... but i'll try.

6th Generation - Sega Dreamcast

After Sega's previous failures, they needed a console to put them back in the race with Sony and Nintendo. So they put out the Dreamcast way before any of the other systems. The Dreamcast was awesome at the time, but Sony told gamers to wait for the Playstation 2 to come out and ignore the Dreamcast.

Many people bought the Dreamcast and weren't disappointed. Sega got America excited by the prospect of the Sega Dreamcast and Sega signed sponsorships with football teams in Europe to raise awareness of the new console.

They signed a deal with Arsenal Football Club in England, Deportivo La Coruna in Spain, Saint-Etienne in France and Sampdoria in Italy.

Sega struggled to keep up with orders with lots of people pre-ordering the console. Sega was on top, stores were selling out and the Dreamcast was doing well and helping Sega get over their losses on the Saturn.

In 2000, Sony released the hyped up Playstation 2 in America and Europe. It was released in Japan 7/8 months before in America and Europe. Sega had already lost out in Japan, because never before had a DVD player been in a console, and the Japanese loved it. Sega knew the dream was over in Japan, they'd lost Japan, so they focused on America and Europe.

Despite all of Sega's effort's they couldn't beat the PS2, Dreamcast just sat on store shelves, some people bought games, but most gamers focus was now firmly on the PS2. Sega even reduced prices really low, but in the end they couldn't compete with the ps2. At one point you could get Dreamcast's for like £50 which was incredibly cheap.

Despite the fact the Dreamcast failed, it had some amazing games and is credited for giving people the chance to play online. It was a system way ahead of it's time and if it had a DVD player built in, it might just have been able to fight the PS2.

In January 2001, Sega announced they would stop production of the Dreamcast and was scrapped.

It may be forgotten by some gamers, but the Dreamcast was a great console and people should play it. You can buy them off of ebay very cheap and the games are cheap too.

The fifth-generation era aka the 32 bit era

This era was dominated by the playstation 1, the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64. The PS1 was a success, you look back now and see the graphics compared to a Ps3 but back then it was brilliant. Sega Saturn failed in America and Europe, and it's only success was in Japan. The Nintendo 64 was a success, i mean some people just don't like nintendo games and nintendo, but people that owned a 64 loved it.

Sega were struggling, they needed a console that would put them back in the race. The thing was, would people trust Sega after all their previous mistakes?.

I will write about the 6th generation soon.
